FAA Knowledge Testing

Every certificate and rating in the pipeline pairs a practical test (the checkride) with a computerized FAA knowledge test. Plan the knowledge test early — it is the cheapest, most schedulable gate in your training, and finishing it early keeps flight training moving at full speed.

WHAT IT IS. A proctored, multiple-choice exam taken at an FAA-approved PSI testing center. Private Pilot: 60 questions, 2.5 hours, 70% to pass. Instrument, Commercial, and Flight Instructor tests follow the same pattern with their own question banks. Results are valid for 24 calendar months toward the matching checkride.

HOW WE PREPARE YOU. Ground School is built around the knowledge test: structured instruction, practice exams under test conditions, and an instructor endorsement when your practice scores show you are ready — we do not send students to the testing center to gamble.

WHERE TO TEST. PSI operates testing centers across the Southern California, including locations convenient to Orange County. Scheduling is online and seats are usually available within days. Current FAA testing fees are paid directly to PSI (typically around $175 per test).

STRATEGY FOR CAREER STUDENTS. Knock out the written for your next rating while you fly the current one. Students who bank the Instrument and Commercial writtens early never stall the pipeline waiting on a test date.
